A 27-year-old man allegedly died during police interrogation at Thirupuvanam here on Saturday.
Sources said, B. Ajith Kumar, 27, was a temporary security personnel at Batharakaliamman temple at Madapuram near Thirupuvanam.
On Friday, Sivagami, 75, along with her daughter Nikitha, of Tirumangalam, visited the temple in their car.
Nikitha was assisting her mother Sivagami to walk inside the temple as the latter could not walk due to age-related ailments. They gave the key to Ajith Kumar for parking the car.
When they returned after the prayer, they allegedly found the bags in the car opened and about 10 sovereign gold ornaments in the bag missing.
Following their complaint with the police, Thirupuvanam police allegedly took Ajith Kumar to the police station for interrogation, sources added.
He was sent back later in the evening.
Again, on Saturday, he was allegedly taken by a different police wing for interrogation.
During interrogation, as he allegedly fell unconscious, he was taken to a hospital in Madurai. There, the doctors declared him dead.
Later, family members of Ajith Kumar gathered at Thirupuvanam police station alleging custodial death. Sivaganga Superintendent of Police Ashish Rawat is investigating the matter.
