Dr. N. Ravi Kumar, the in-charge superintendent of government-run Niloufer Hospital in Hyderabad, was suspended by the Telangana Health Department after he allegedly permitted the construction of a private medical store within the hospital premises without official permission.

The suspension order, issued on Thursday (May 22, 2025) by Health Secretary Christina Z. Chongthu, stated “In circumstances reported by the Director of Medical Education (DME), the in-charge superintendent of Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad has been placed under suspension.” Dr. Ravi Kumar was unavailable for comment.

The Health department has appointed Dr. G. Vijay Kumar, professor of Paediatrics at Niloufer Hospital, as the in-charge superintendent.

An official from the Health minister’s office explained that the controversy surfaced when regional media outlets reported the ongoing construction work for a private medical store within the hospital. Responding to queries, Dr. Ravi Kumar reportedly claimed that the construction was being carried out with permissions from both the Health department and the Hyderabad district collector, which was refuted by the officials. The official also confirmed that the construction was demolished by authorities on Friday (May 23, 2025).

Hyderabad collector Anudeep Durishetty denied issuing any such authorisation. “No individual or private entity has been granted permission to carry out any construction activity on the land within the Niloufer Hospital premises,” he said, adding that strict action would be taken against those involved in unauthorized use of government property.

When The Hindu reached out for a comment from the Director of Medical Education (DME) Dr. A. Narendra Kumar, there was no response to calls or texts.
