NCW calls for probe into ‘derogatory’ comments on Amaravati women

The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Tuesday took suo motu cognisance of the media reports on the alleged derogatory remarks made by journalist V.V.R. Krishnam Raju on the Amaravati women during debate aired on the Sakshi TV.  

“Referring to Amaravati as a capital of prostitutes is an outrageous insult to women farmers there. Such comments are unacceptable,” the NCW said.

The NCW, on social media platform ‘X‘, said that its Chairperson Vijaya K. Rahatkar had written a letter to the DGP of Andhra Pradesh, directing the latter to conduct a swift and time-bound investigation and strict action against Mr. Krishnam Raju under the relevant laws.

“A detailed action taken report has been sought from the authorities concerned within three days,” the NCW said. 

Lokesh praises NCW

Meanwhile, HRD Minister Nara Lokesh commended the National Commission for Women (NCW) for taking a suo motu congnisance of the case.  

“I commend the NCW and its Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar for the swift and decisive action against the derogatory remarks by V.V.R. Krishnam Raju, targeting the brave women of Amaravati,” Mr. Lokesh posted on social media platform X.  

The Minister further said, “Calling our women farmers prostitutes is not only shameful but also a criminal insult to their sacrifices. The NCW’s directive for a time-bound probe and strict legal action sends a strong message that such misogyny won’t be tolerated. Women are the backbone of Amaravati’s struggle, and we stand firmly with them. Justice must be delivered swiftly.”
